Active Loudspeakers (ALS) operate on a totally different basis to conventional loudspeakers with passive crossover networks (PXN).
PXN systems often suffer from shortcomings including, power loss, impedance variation, phase variation and inaccurate response.
Top end PXN systems overcome many of these shortcomings using elaborate networks and top grade, and therefore  expensive, inductors and capacitors.

A typical ALS system uses a separate power amplifier for each driver loudspeaker, one for Low Frequencies (LF), one for mid range frequencies (MF) , and one for high frequencies (HF).
The advantages are:

bulletThe filters can be placed before each power amplifier and therefore only pass minute currents.
bulletThe filter components are much smaller, more accurate and far less expensive
bulletThe filter electronics can be tailored more easily for an accurate response
bulletImpedance matching to each driver is improved with no X over intermodulation products
bulletGenerally there is a definite audible improvement compared to the same set of drivers in a typical PXN system.

The main disadvantage: There is more electronics to go wrong and sometimes it does. That's where we come in to the picture!
